How Do I Measure my Trailer Rims?

How Do I Measure my Trailer Rims?

When you are in the market for new trailer rims you first need to obtain accurate measurements of the required rims for your trailer. The good news is that you will only need a few simple tools to properly measure your trailer for the appropriate rims. Your main objective will be to determine the size of the hub and the bolt spacing to ensure you buy the appropriate trailer rims.

How To Measure Trailer Rims

Here are the necessary steps to measure your trailer rims. Make note there are two ways to measure depending if you have and even number of bolts (step 3) or an odd number of bolts (step 4):

  1. The first step will require you to take off one of the trailer rims from one side of the trailer.
  2. Next, you will want to make a note of lug bolts present on the hub. Most trailer hubs have four to five lug bolts. Trailers that are designed to carry heavier loads may have more.
  3. For trailer hubs with an even number of bolts: Grab a tape measure. Measure the distance between the center of one bolt and the center of the bolt directly across the rim. The distance combined with the number of bolts in the pattern will determine what trailer rims you need.
  4. For trailer hubs with an odd number of bolts: Measure from the center of one bolt to a point halfway between the two adjacent bolts. The combination of the bolt number and the distance to the center of the diameter will determine which rims will fit your trailer.

Common Sizes

  • The two most common lug patterns are four on 4″ and five on 4-1/2″ hubs. These hubs are typically seen on smaller boat and utility trailers.
  • A very common designation for boat trailer hubs would be 5 on 4-1/2 or 545 for short. This means that the hub has 5 bolts spaced evenly on a 4-1/2″ circle.
